Create File Upload Process

The most convenient way to create your VP Backup processes is to use the VP Backup Setup Wizard. However, you can also create backup processes manually.

These instructions show you how to create a file upload process, which tells VP Backup WHERE you want to save your backup files. You also either create a database backup or click a directory backup process, both of which tell VP Backup WHAT you want to backup.

Ideally, you should backup your data to a remove FTP server (that is, a computer NOT in your office) for safe-keeping. (For information about our recommended FTP Hosting Service, click here.) If an off-site FTP server is not available, you can save the files to a drive within your local network.

Please note that while you can have as many database and directory processes as you need to backup all your important data, you can have only one file upload process. To use any of these options, you must first open your VP Backup Service application.

Select to Create a New File Upload Process

The file upload process is the final step in your VP Backup protocol.  It specifies where the final backup files from all your database and directory processes will be saved. To create a new file upload process:

  1. Open the VP Backup Service application.
    1. If the ViewPoint icon ( ) appears in the status area of your taskbar, usually the lower right-hand corner of your screen, double-click the icon to open the VP Backup Service application.
    2. If the ViewPoint icon ( ) is NOT on your taskbar, you must first activate VP Backup Service, then double-click the icon.
  2. If a file upload process already exists, you must delete it before you can create a new one.
To do so, first click the Upload Backup Files process that appears in your list. You may then delete the process on one of these ways:
    1. Click the {Delete} icon on the toolbar.
    2. Right-click Upload Backup Files and select {Delete}.
    3. Select {Processes} then {Delete} from the menu at the top of the screen.
  1. Select to create a new file upload process with one of the following methods:
    1. Select {Processes} then {New ->} and {File Upload} from the menu at the top of the screen.

    2. Click the [V] beside the icon, then select [File Upload].

Note that the new file upload option is available only when no other file upload process exists.)

You can now define the file upload process properties.

Define Where to Store Your Backup Files

Notice that the file upload options contain two tabs of settings: [Default Upload Options] and [Alternate Upload Options].  You can define these settings to save your backup files to one location on certain days of the week, and save the files to a second location on all other days. This feature allows you to maintain at least a two-day safety net of backup files, and allows you to store one set of backup files on your local network and one set on a remote FTP server.

  1. The {Process Name} is the same for both tabs, and can contain up to 255 characters, letters and/or numbers. Characters such as  *,&, ? are invalid. If you are modifying an existing process, you cannot change the name.

  2. The [Default Upload Options] tab settings determine where VP Backup will store the backup files on all days that are NOT included in the [Alternate Upload Options] tab.

    1. To specify a location on your network (rather than a remote FTP server) for your default options:
    2. To use a remote FTP server, select Upload files using File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Then, complete the FTP upload options settings for your situation.
    3. After defining your upload location, click the [Test Connection] button to be certain that your selected location is available to this computer. If you receive an error, select another location, or correct the connection error before continuing.
  3. Click the [Alternate Upload Options] tab if you want to specify a second, or alternate, backup location for specific days of the week.
  4. Click [Save Changes] to save the process properties

Your new process is added to the VP Backup Service application list.

You can re-order the processes in the list with the and buttons on the toolbar as needed. Note that the file upload process MUST be the last process in the list.  Any processes listed underneath the file upload process will NOT be included in the final backup.

Remember, only one File Upload process can exist at any time; this single process determines the location of the backup files created by all your Database and Directory processes.

If you choose to create your backup processes manually, rather than using the VP Backup Service Wizard, you will want to also schedule your backups to begin automatically on the days and time most appropriate for your office.  Click here for more information.
